			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/songsmith/index.html">Microsoft Songsmith</a> is gaining a lot of popularity these days for <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oGFogwcx-E">all the wrong reasons</a>.  It&#8217;s a piece of software that takes your singing and attempts to create appropriate background music and rhythm tracks to accompany you.  All you have to do is sing to a metronome, and it does the rest of the work.  The results range from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmC28cXWqLc">bland</a> to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BZk6aZp9xE">soul-negating</a>.</p>
<p>I decided to see what would happen if I played some of my vocals from the 24-track masters of a <a href="http://www.myspace.com/boxesband">Boxes</a> song through the system.  I chose this song because the vocals start quickly, the key changes several times during the song, and it&#8217;s a depressing mope caught on tape.  Perfect fodder for a cheery MIDI makeover.</p>
